Biological dosimetry (biodosimetry) is crucial for preparedness against radiation accidents. In the chaotic aftermath of such incidents, medical teams must quickly identify who has been exposed and to what extent. Biodosimetry steps in as an essential method to retrospectively estimate radiation exposure using biological markers.

In our interconnected world, forming international biodosimetry networks is more important than ever. These networks enable regions or countries to share knowledge, resources, and expertise, ensuring a swift and coordinated global response to radiation emergencies. However, an essential prerequisite for this type of collaboration is the joint standardization and harmonization of procedures. Automation of the microscope-based evaluation of many biodosimetry tests, above all the chromosome aberration test as the Gold Standard, can become an important factor at this point.

MetaSystems achieved its first successes in the automated detection of dicentric chromosomes based on the Metafer scanning software over 30 years ago. The latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence for image analysis, more precisely the so-called Deep Neural Networks (DNN), will likely improve this technology many times over in the future.

At the EPRBioDose conference in Hirosaki, Japan, we will present the current state of development of this method in connection with the chromosome aberration test. Our application specialist at MetaSystems in Germany, Dr. Andreas Brown, will present a talk titled: “Towards Automated Aberration Detection: First Results with a DNN-Based Approach Realized Using Metafer”. During the presentation, our expert will show the first results of DNN-based detection not only of dicentric chromosomes but also of other aberration types such as ring chromosomes and fragments in Metafer-generated images.
